Will.i.am on top as Bowie returns to UK charts

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. producer will.i.am's collaboration with Britney Spears topped the British pop charts on Sunday as David Bowie notched up his first top 10 single in two decades with his surprise new release.

Launched without warning on Bowie's 66th birthday, the single "Where Are We Now?" caused widespread media interest, and charted in sixth place despite only having been available for five days.

It was his first new song in almost a decade and produced his best chart performance since 1986, when he reached number two with "Absolute Beginners", the Official Charts Company said.

Topping the chart was "Scream and Shout" by will.i.am, featuring Britney Spears, giving her a first British number one since 2004.

U.S. country-pop star Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" moved up to second, with James Arthur, winner of the British version of the "X Factor" TV talent show last year, dropping from first to third with "Impossible".

In the album chart, singer Emeli Sand? returned to number one with "Our Version of Events", which has now spent 48 consecutive weeks in the Top 10.

Last week's chart-topper "18 Months" by Scottish producer and singer Calvin Harris dropped to second place, and English singer Jake Bugg rose a place to third with his eponymous album.

R&B star Rihanna climbed three to fourth with "Unapologetic". The only new entry in the top 10 was the soundtrack from the Oscar-nominated film musical "Les Miserables", which debuted in fifth.

Google Honors 150th Anniversary of Bulgarian Satire Writer Aleko

Google has honored the 150th anniversary of loved Bulgarian writer Aleko Konstantinov with a so-called 'doodle' on its Google.bg start page.

The Google image depicts Aleko, sitting in a railway compartment together with his perhaps most famous literary character, Bay Gany?.

Bay Gany? is famous for portraying naturalistically the somewhat nastier sides of the Bulgarian psyche - high self-esteem, combined with base manners and an egoistic drive for personal gain and political power.

Aleko Konstantinov was born in the Danube town of Svishtov on January 13, 1863 in the family of a wealthy merchang.

He studied law in Russia and after coming back to Bulgaria worked in turns as judge, prosecutor, lawyer and law professor.

Konstantinov published widely a string of satirical short stories and novellas, as well as travel writing of special importance for Bulgarian literature.

He is also the founder of the hiking movement in Bulgaria, when in 1895 he organized a mass climb of the Cherni Vrah peak on Vitosha Mountain nearby Sofia, laying the foundation of the Bulgarian Tourist Union.

Konstantinov died young, killed at age 34 on May 23, 1897 in an assassination attempt directed against Bulgarian politician Mihail Takev.

Although he lived a less than well-off life, and was subjected to reviling due to his exposing of corruption in Bulgarian life, Aleko retained his humor and optimism, for which he was dubbed Shtastlivetsa, or The Happy One in Bulgarian.

Build Your Own Bluetooth Network Monitor and Keep Tabs on Your Internet Connection

Build Your Own Bluetooth Network Monitor and Keep Tabs on Your Internet ConnectionBuild Your Own Bluetooth Network Monitor and Keep Tabs on Your Internet Connection It's pretty common knowledge that ISPs never offer you the kinds of upload and download speeds they advertise in the real world. So when you're gaming or downloading and want to know whether that lag is packet loss, what do you do? This enterprising DIYer hacked together his own network monitor that sits on his desk and feeds him data on the health of his connection.

Zak Kemble, the maker behind the monitor, wanted a way to keep tabs on his connection without logging in to his router to check, so he built this monitor. It uses a simple shell script and a low-cost microprocessor and Bluetooth module to communicate with the router, displays the information on the tiny LCD display, and is powered over USB. You can see it in action in the video above (turn annotations on, he includes descriptive notes as annotations to the video.)

Under the hood, the monitor uses ATmega328P microcontroller (available for under $5 at SparkFun Electronics) at its heart to manage a 1.8" color LCD display, a Bluetooth module, and uses V-USB for USB support. It's definitely no beginner project, but if you're up to the challenge (and we've shown you how you can be), it looks really useful and a lot of fun. Zak has even provided all of the code and associated files so you can build your own, just hit the link below.
