?Pitt Meadows mayor is on another planet?

Published: August 02, 2012 7:00 PM

Editor, The News:

Re: Pitt residents still signing tax petition (The News, July 25).

?I can assure you that we will be responsible in the decision making process and we understand the need to maintain certain service levels, protect our assets now and into the future while remaining fiscally prudent and sustainable.?

That is the last sentence of the letter that Mayor Deb Walters has sent to all the signers of the tax petition.?Our mayor is stating that she plans to continue to spend freely and we should trust her to look after our interests. Well, spending us into a hole we may never get out of isn?t how you run a city or a business.

The proposed four percent tax increases for the next five years is a sure sign that the mayor is on another planet.

Who of you, Pitt Meadows taxpayers, have gotten four percent annual pay or pension increases in the last five years?

Over the last 15 years, we?ve gone through good and bad economic times. Not once can I recall our property taxes holding the line or decreasing.

When times are bad, we get hit with bigger tax increases so the city can ?maintain service levels.? When times are good, they continue to spend freely.

The tax petition has been presented to council. How loud do we need to be before the city will hear and listen to us?

One dead in Kenyan capital grenade attack: police

A grenade attack killed one person in a Somali suburb of the Kenyan capital on Friday, on the eve of a visit by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the city, police said.

"We confirm one fatality, it is too early to tell if there are others," police spokesman Eric Kiraithe told AFP, adding that the attack took place in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighbourhood.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, the latest in a string of attacks in Kenya.

Clinton, on an 11-day, seven-nation Africa tour, is due to travel to Kenya on Saturday, where she is due to meet with Kenyan leaders and officials from Somalia's government, which is preparing to end its mandate later this month.

Kenya has suffered a spate of grenade attacks, shootings and bomb blasts since sending troops into southern Somalia in October to crush Islamist bases there, prompting warnings of revenge attacks by the Al-Qaeda linked fighters.

In June, attackers in the border garrison town of Garissa carried out Kenya's worst attack in a decade, when they targeted worshippers as they held Sunday prayer services, killing 18.

Somalia's weak and Western-backed transitional government is due wrap up on August 20 after eight years of infighting and minimal progress, to be replaced by a new system chosen through a United Nations-backed process.

Nairobi's Eastleigh district is home to thousands of Kenyan ethnic Somalis, as well as Somalis who have fled more than two decades of war in their nation.

Researchers invent new tool to study single biological molecules

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? By blending optical and atomic force microscope technologies, Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory researchers have found a way to complete 3-D measurements of single biological molecules with unprecedented accuracy and precision.

Existing technologies allow researchers to measure single molecules on the x and y axes of a 2-D plane. The new technology allows researchers to make height measurements (the z axis) down to the nanometer -- just a billionth of a meter -- without custom optics or special surfaces for the samples.

"This is a completely new type of measurement that can be used to determine the z position of molecules," said Sanjeevi Sivasankar, an Iowa State assistant professor of physics and astronomy and an associate of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory.

Details of the technology were recently published by the journal Nano Letters. Co-authors of the study are Sivasankar; Hui Li, an Iowa State post-doctoral research associate in physics and astronomy and an associate of the Ames Laboratory; and Chi-Fu Yen, an Iowa State doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering and a student associate of the Ames Laboratory.

The project was supported by lab startup funds from Iowa State University and a $120,075 grant from the Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state economic development program.

Sivasankar's research program has two objectives: to learn how biological cells adhere to each other and to develop new tools to study those cells.

That's why the new microscope technology -- called standing wave axial nanometry (SWAN) -- was developed in Sivasankar's lab.

Here's how the technology works: Researchers attach a commercial atomic force microscope to a single molecule fluorescence microscope. The tip of the atomic force microscope is positioned over a focused laser beam, creating a standing wave pattern. A molecule that has been treated to emit light is placed within the standing wave. As the tip of the atomic force microscope moves up and down, the fluorescence emitted by the molecule fluctuates in a way that corresponds to its distance from the surface. That distance can be compared to a marker on the surface and measured.

"We can detect the height of the molecule with nanometer accuracy and precision," Sivasankar said.

The paper reports that measurements of a molecule's height are accurate to less than a nanometer. It also reports that measurements can be taken again and again to a precision of 3.7 nanometers.

Sivasankar's research team used fluorescent nanospheres and single strands of DNA to calibrate, test and prove their new instrument.

Users who could benefit from the technology include medical researchers who need high-resolution data from microscopes. Sivasankar thinks the technology has commercial potential and is confident it will advance his own work in single molecule biophysics.

"We hope to use this technology to move that research forward," he said. "And in doing that, we'll continue to invent new technologies."

Auto Insurance Guide That You Must Know | Tourism Articles

A great way to save some money on your car or truck insurance is to drive your vehicle less frequently. Many of today?s best auto insurance companies offer discounts to customers for low-mileage, incentivizing people to keep their cars parked. If you can walk instead of drive, you can get some good exercise and save money on your insurance.

If you are car shopping be sure to check with your auto insurance agent about how the car you are selecting will affect your premium. Different cars will have different effects on your insurance costs, and it is often difficult to predict on your own what a certain car will mean for your premiums.

Be proactive when finding auto insurance policies by asking for discounts. Companies may not vocalize their discounts when you are getting a quote, but by speaking up, you might find that you qualify for a discount and no matter how big or how small the discount is, you are saving money.

If you want to greatly decrease your car insurance payments, wait until your pre-existing tickets and fines have disappeared from your record. Then go and get new quotes from anew company when your driving record is clean and the savings will add up to hundreds of dollars back in your pocket every year.

Find out if you can get a discount on your car insurance premiums if you have not made any claims during the last three years. Some insurance companies will give you a special discount because you are not seen as a higher risk driver due to no recent insurance claims.

If your goal is to lower the cost of your car insurance premium, remember that insurance companies often charge more to insure cars that are flashier or that cost more to repair. Having a low-profile vehicle, that is unlikely to get stolen, can often dramatically lower your rates.

When looking into auto insurance, you need to think about how much insurance you will need. Each state has a minimum amount of coverage each driver needs to maintain, so be sure to use that as a starting point. If your car is worth more, then you need more insurance. Similarly, if your car is a beater, chances are your insurance costs will be significantly lower.

If you are a first time auto insurance buyer, shop around! Your parents insurance may not be for you. Auto insurance is extremely important to have and you can get great deals out there. Do not go with the first quote that you are given. Insurance is a competitive business. Take advantage of this!

Try to maintain good credit scores. A few states, like California, ban the use of your credit score when calculating insurance premiums, but most allow it. Companies see people with low credit scores as high risk customers, so they?ll probably charge a hefty premium compared to a person with high credit scores.

Don?t try to reduce your auto insurance rates by cutting back on liability coverage when insuring your teen driver. Teen drivers have been shown to be more likely to have a car accident than an adult. If you lower your liability coverage, and your teen injures someone with your car, you could be responsible for thousands of dollars to cover the damages and medical expenses.

When determining how much auto insurance coverage you will need, you must keep in mind your driving record. If you make a long treacherous commute to work every day, or if you have a history of accidents, you should get more complete coverage. More complete coverage could include collision or comprehensive, depending on your specific requirements.

For those that will be going away to college and will not be taking their cars, it is important to know that you may be able to receive a discount on your insurance. Most insurance companies provide discounts when you are not going to use your car for extended periods of time.

Learn and understand the different types of auto insurance coverage. When it comes to choosing a policy, you will know what you need and what is appropriate for maintaining a lower rate. You can choose the coverage that is tailored to your needs without being confused of what type of insurance you need.

As you choose car insurance, be sure to properly protect yourself when it comes to liability for property damage and bodily injury. The right amount of coverage in this area can make a big difference in the event of an accident. Not having enough coverage can leave you with a lawsuit that can be hard to recover from.

When considering extras for your auto insurance, you can most likely do without the car rental insurance. You will pay nearly $50 a year for rental insurance, when that is the same cost for renting a car for one to two days. Also, your rental car is most likely already covered under your policy, anyhow.

Knowledge is power. Now that you have had a chance to read up on some really great auto insurance buying ideas, you will have the power that you need to go out and get the best possible deal. Even if you already have a current policy, you can renegotiate or make any needed changes.

?Children?s minds don?t close down at 3pm.?
- Richard W. Riley, Former U.S. Secretary of Education

?

Many families include parents that work full-time outside the home; as a result, children coming home from school can find themselves alone and unsupervised for hours at a time. Afterschool programs are an option to consider.
These programs offer valuable educational, athletic, artistic, and social opportunities for students, They help develop self-confidence and healthy independence in safe, supportive, and well-supervised environments.
According to a report published jointly by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S Department of Justice, students in after-school programs benefit from improved academic skills, fewer behavioral problems, better interpersonal skills, and an ability to handle conflicts better than students not involved in such programs.
Many local schools offer afterschool programs and activities that cater to a variety of interests, including sports, dance and music, as well as academic enhancement.
Some local options include Sweet Home Elementary School?s 21st Century After-School Learning Center. This program includes one hour of academic help for students, and one hour of recreation, including supervised team building, sports, cooking, guitar, clay, photography, art, mentoring, and more.
The Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis offers a variety of afterschool programs, including Kinder Club and the STARS program. Kinder Club is an afternoon extension for children enrolled in morning kindergarten programs elsewhere. Kids participate in a wide range of activities, including reading, math, science, nature, arts & crafts, music, and physical education. The STARS program, an afterschool academic enrichment program, runs until 6:00 pm during the school year at seven local elementary schools.
In Albany, The Boys and Girls Club Technology Program is dedicated to integrating technology skills into their after-school programs.
In Lebanon, kids can learn about planting seeds, garden care, and cooking in the garden club.
All of the Boys and Girls Club also organize after school sports teams for children and teens, including soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball, track and field, cheerleading, rugby, and basketball.
